Humberside Police Takes Crime-fighting and Community Policing to the Next Level with NiCE Investigate
Humberside Police, established in 1974, is a territorial police force consisting of over 2,500 officers. It is responsible for protecting and serving a diverse area that includes the coast, countryside, and urban regions, covering 1,357 square miles and encompassing Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire, and North East Lincolnshire. The Challenge
Crime-solving is fundamentally about uncovering the truth, which relies heavily on digital evidence. However, the volume, speed, and variety of this digital evidence are increasing at an astonishing rate. Like many police forces across the UK, Humberside Police faced a growing amount of digital evidence, leading to technical and logistical challenges. Investigating officers often had to log into multiple systems or manually request and wait for evidence from other sources.
Although Humberside Police had access to advanced crime-fighting technology, the department was looking for a centralised platform to consolidate all their evidence and streamline investigations.
Recognised for crime-fighting best practices via programmes like Operation Gallant, Humberside Police was also looking for more efficient ways to crowdsource digital evidence from communities during the golden hour after crimes occurred.
CCTV plays a crucial role in crime-fighting, and gathering footage through physical visits was a significant drain on time and resources. Humberside Police sought a Digital Evidence Management solution that could tackle all these challenges, meet practical needs, and provide a path forward.
The Solution
After an extensive vetting and competitive procurement process, Humberside Police implemented the NiCE Investigate Digital Evidence Management solution (DEMs) in September 2024.
The implementation team was led by Detective Sergeant Scott McCreight from the Humberside Police Digital Services department. His mission was to ensure NiCE Investigate provided immediate benefits to front-line detectives, constables, firearms teams, PCSOs, and support staff.
"Everybody’s embracing it, everybody’s using it. We’re saving hundreds of pounds a day with NiCE, in travel and resource time alone," said DS McCreight.
NiCE Investigate streamlines the process of gathering and managing digital evidence by automatically collecting it from connected sources and consolidating it into digital case folders in the cloud. Officers can log into a single system to view all evidence related to their cases.
Facilitating Community Engagement and Fast Evidence Collection
Operation Gallant focuses on providing comprehensive support in response to residential burglaries. Within 24–48 hours after a burglary, officers conduct inquiries to gather potential evidence, including video doorbells or CCTV footage.
Using NiCE Investigate, officers can quickly send residents secure links to upload footage and photos directly into the case file.
"The system makes it much easier for our officers to collect footage," DS McCreight explained. "All they need to do is provide a resident with a link to upload relevant footage, which is automatically added to the case file."
The ability to have everything in one place and securely share with other forces, lawyers, and the CPS is a game changer.
More Improvements on the Horizon
The next phase involves collaborating with local councils and businesses to speed up CCTV sharing through NiCE Investigate’s Community Portal. Pre-registered cameras will be geo-located on a map, allowing officers to request and receive CCTV footage electronically without physical travel.
Future plans include integrating dashcam footage from police vehicles and automatically ingesting 999 and 101 calls through NiCE Inform, which will replace the current call recording system in 2025.
