BAPCO Event sponsors APD control room award

The annual BAPCO Conference & Exhibition is sponsoring the ‘Services to the Public’ category at this year’s APD Control Room Awards. The ceremony, which this year will be virtual, takes place on May 14.

Discussing the reasons for wanting to become involved in the event, a spokesperson said: “Control room personnel do an extraordinary job, in often extremely stressful circumstances. It’s only right to recognise the work that they do, and the APD awards are a perfect way for us to do that.

“We’ve chosen the ‘Services to the Public’ award because it specifically highlights control personnel’s unique relationship with the people who they help protect. It’s hugely resonant, particularly during times such as these.”

Discussing why this year’s awards are so important, APD commercial director Rhiannon Beeson said: “Throughout the pandemic, control rooms have become even busier, in part because of increased COVID-19 related sickness and self-isolation.

“Call volumes have further increased, and unprecedented additional pressures have been placed on resources. [In the face of that] control room teams have continued to do a fantastic job.”

She continued: “It’s great that this online event will enable [families of control room staff] to fully appreciate the vital life-saving and life-changing work their loved ones contribute, every day. Most of us will identify with the theme that it’s our families and friends who support us most behind the scenes, to do our jobs well.”

As well as services to the public, other categories include lifetime achievement, call taker of the year, dispatcher of the year, young achiever, and more. According to APD, almost 400 nominations from more than 80 organisations were received ahead of the 2020 awards.
